This afternoon will be the final practice of the week where the Saints will only be focused on working on their own schemes and plays. Starting tomorrow they will begin to implement the game plan for Arizona and really start preparing for that first pre-season contest.
4:27 p.m. We learned this morning that the three main guys who have been missing some practice time on offense will not play in the first pre-season game. Deuce McAllister, Jeremy Shockey and Devery Henderson will sit Thursday when the Saints play the Cardinals. Marques Colston, who's been out since Friday morning with swelling behind his knee, is questionable for the game.
4:35 p.m. No pads for this practice. Also the heat dried up the lower grass field here, allowing the team to use it this afternoon, this morning they were on the turf.
4:41 p.m. One of Drew Brees' favorite targets in camp has been tight end Billy Miller. A lot of that has been because Jeremy Shockey is limited in practice time. Miller understands that too, saying this morning that he knows his role on the team, which means backup to Shockey. Miller said he's out here every day trying to prove himself because he knows one small slip up and a team can lose faith in you. Miller referenced how he used to be the starter in Houston but a few years ago they decided to take Owen Daniels in the draft, making him expendable.
4:50 p.m. Colston is sitting out practice again. He's got a wrap on his left leg and is walking around the sidelines with a little bit of a limp. This is a new injury for Colston but Coach Payton says it's not serious and that if this were a regular season game week he could probably tough it out and play.
4:57 p.m. David Patten is not working out this afternoon but he is doing some cheering. Robert Meachem just made a crazy one-handed catch and Patten was hollering at him as he ran back into line.
5:03 p.m. With the good comes the bad usually when talking about Meachem. After fighting to get clear of Mike McKenzie he dropped a quick out. Same can be said for Adrian Arrington, he just made one nice catch and then two plays later dropped a ball along the sideline.
5:15 p.m. The Saints have been spending a lot of time working on red-zone and goalline situations. This morning the first team offense was pretty ineffecitve in these drills, and although they're not in pads right now they look a lot better.
5:27 p.m. It doesn't happen often so it's worth mentioning, Drew Brees throws an interception. Randall Gay stepped in front of an out-route to make the pick.
5:31 p.m. There's a break in practice as the team heads to the cool tent, and they seem pretty excited to be in there listening to the noises coming from that direction.
5:44 p.m. They've returned from the tent and are kicking field goals. Martin Gramatica went 3 for 3 and Taylor Mehlhaff went 2 for 3 (at least from what I could tell). Off to the side Drew Brees is throwing passes to Jeremy Shockey. Well it looks like practice is over, our Monday wrap is coming soon.
