Yes this morning was an uneventful practice, but we expect to have much more to talk about this afternoon.
3:53 p.m. There have been some sprinkles of rain coming down, but nothing heavy and nothing at this moment. This team is out to the field in full pads and are going through warm-ups.
3:55 p.m. Jeremy Shockey looks to be the only offensive guy who will not practice this afternoon. Shockey is here but just in shorts and his jersey. The team has been real careful with him as he recovers from a broken leg suffered last season. Yes Deuce McAllister is in full pads, practicing for the first time really since Tuesday night.
4:08 p.m. I'll have more notes from today's interview with Drew Brees coming up later in the wrap up, but it was interesting to hear him talk about the receiver competition and who's standing out. Brees said the core guys are doing what they always do and then he made specific mention of Robert Meachem and Adrian Arrington and the progress they're making.
4:13 p.m. Coach Payton is paying close attention to the receivers and DB's as they go against each other in a drill seeing how cleanly the wideouts can get off the line of scrimmage. Marques Colston overpowers his man almost every time. Meachem still looks like he needs to get stronger and guys like Lance Moore rely on their speed and shiftiness, which usually takes longer, to get free.
4:22 p.m. Not sure if the light showers made the field slick (they're on the upper grass fields) but David Patten just slipped going out for a pass with no one covering him.
4:30 p.m. A rare drop by Adrian Arrington in individual drills.
4:33 p.m. Coach Payton talked about him yesterday and Carl Nicks continues to impress. The rookie just held off another rookie, Sedrick Ellis, in one-on-one drills where the defensive lineman tries to get past the blocker and tackle a ballcarrier.
4:35 p.m. That O-line vs. D-line drill was one of the more intense little sessions I've seen all camp. Pretty even as to which side performed better, we did see Jonathan Goodwin get handled pretty well by big fella Hollis Thomas.
4:39 p.m. They've moved into full team drills, first pass play Brees had Billy Miller along the sideline but linebacker Scott Shanle knocked the ball away as Miller was coming down.
4:42 p.m. In our morning notes we mentioned that an NFL officiating crew is here at camp. They're in town for a few days to go over the rules with all the coaches and players and get a little practice themselves. The refs are out here right now in their zebra stripes, officiating this practice.
4:49 p.m. The daily field goal attempts just took place. Gramatica was 3-3, but the first, and shortest, one looked like it barely made it inside the upright. Mehlhaff banged all of his through as well, no doubters.
5:03 p.m. Situational work, the offense just tried to line up and work on drawing the defense off-sides, didn't work.
5:10 p.m. Sedrick Ellis is a quick dude, the offensive lineman are having a hard time staying in front of him in one-on-one drills. Rob Hunt is the latest victim.
5:13 p.m. With so many guys competiting at the receiver position, I feel like rookie Todd Blythe is left out of the conversation a lot. The Iowa St. product is not the most athletic of the bunch, but he has good hands and can catch the ball in traffic. He just snagged two in a row from Tyler Palko.
5:18 p.m. Coach Payton talked about the new, trimmed down version of Mike Karney this morning. The starting fullback doesn't see the ball a lot but Brees just connected with him on a dump off pass.
5:21 p.m. Not a great practice for Arrington, ball from Mark Brunell goes right through his hands.
5:26 p.m. Deuce McAllister gets through the right side on a decent looking run. Ever since his scare last Friday with some swelling in the knee, Deuce has looked good moving around.
5:30 We saw this yesterday, the offense working on the no-huddle. Brees completes a pass to Colston, give Colston 75% of that completion because of an awesome reach back grab
5:34 p.m. Another completion to Billy Miller, Brees calls timeout. On third down Reggie Bush gets the call and uses a little force to get the first down and touchdown.
5:36 Second team is getting their chance. Arrington makes a grab falling out of bounds but he doesn't get both feet in. That's always an adjustment for rookie receivers, making sure both feet are in before they go out of bounds.
5:40 p.m. Big play by Robert Meachem, catch and run for about 50 yards. However the offense can't put it in the endzone. Tyler Palko throws behind Arrington on a quick slant.
5:42 p.m. Things look to be wrapping up here. Be sure to look for our offensive wrap up in a little bit.
