Saints Training Camp in Jackson: Offense Day Seven, Practice One

Saints Camp

By Travis Recek

We're officially one week into Saints training camp. The team is coming off a night practice Tuesday, so they cancelled today's morning workout. Then rain pushed a 3 p.m. start time back to 4 p.m. and forced the workouts to be held on the Millsaps turf field. The rain also created sticky, muggy conditions. It's not really hot, just humid to the point of nasty.

4:10 p.m. Even though it's their only practice of the day, the team is out in just shorts and shoulder pads. Deuce McAllister and Jeremy Shockey are both sitting this pracitce out. That might be a precautionary measure in case the field is still a little wet and slick.

4:21 p.m. Here's a link to the Saints website that has a depth chart which has been updated within the last week, http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Team/Depth%20Chart.aspx   Don't know exactly who puts this depth chart out but a couple of things standout, like Devery Henderson being listed as a starting wide receiver. We know Henderson is out with a hamstring injury for a week but there have been rumors of him not making the team if he has a bad camp. From starter to not on the squad is a big leap.

4:41 p.m. Sorry for the delay, I had to move over to the shady side of the stands. We did just get our Marques Colston "wow" moment of the day. Colston snagged the nose of the football with just his right hand to catch a TD from Mark Brunell.

4:44 p.m. The offensive intensity is much better this practice. They are breaking the huddle with a loud grunt and the offensive lineman are blowing off the ball with a little more urgency.

4:47 p.m. Receivers are going one-on-one with the DB's. Colston looks good, Lance Moore is making his catches and Adrian Arrington had a chance to go up and get a pass over Usama Young, but Young made a great play to knock it out at the last minute.

4:52 p.m Sean Payton just made a stop off at the owners tent, which is located right on the sideline. Payton spent a few minutes talking with Mr. Benson while the team is doing punting drills.

5:10 p.m We're back live with full team work. First play Drew Brees went play action and threw long to Lance Moore. Moore had to come back to get the ball but made a nice catch.

5:12 p.m In three receiver sets, it's Moore getting reps with the first team instead of Terrance Copper.

5:14 p.m. Forgot to mention that running back Chris Barclay is not out here this afternoon. Barclay went down last night with what looked like a serious ankle injury.

5:16 p.m. A lot of eyes today are on first round pick Sedrick Ellis, who is out here for the first time. Stopping Ellis on the pass rush is 2nd team lineman Andy Alleman, who's doing a pretty good job.

5:22 p.m. The first team offense just had an unproductive series and then the second team scores on the first play. Great play fake by Brunell and good job by Robert Meachem to get wide open and haul in a deep ball.

5:27 p.m. Moving on to red zone work, David Patten stole an interception from Jason David and made the catch himself. Next play Aaron Stecker dropped a swing pass. In the theme of one good, one bad, Brees then hit Billy Miller in the back of the endzone.

5:31 p.m. Going for a catch in the endzone, Adrian Arrington just came up limping, favoring his right leg. Also Robert Meachem just dropped a pass.

5:33 p.m. Arrington walked it off and is back in there.

5:36 p.m. I have to say that the most consistent group on offense this whole week of camp has been the tight ends. We pretty much know that Jeremy Shockey is going to make big plays. However, both Mark Campbell and Billy Miller have made a lot of catches and even Ronnie Ghent has looked solid.

5:39 p.m. We're now in hurry-up offense mode. Brees looks sharp leading his team down the field without a huddle. Bush has caught a couple of screen passes, Miller snagged one over the middle and Moore made a catch near the sideline and got out of bounds. But they couldn't finish the drive with a TD, time ran out.

5:45 p.m. Second team offense goes nowhere thanks to dropped passes by Buck Ortega and Robert Meachem. Looks like this practice is done, couple of sprints to wrap things up. We'll be back to wrap things up from day seven in just a little bit.
