After falling short of a state title by just three points last season, Washington School eased their pain from that loss Friday with a 26-7 championship victory over Magnolia Heights.
This is the first MPSA Class AAA Div. II title for the Generals since the divisions split back in 2002.
The game started slow with Washington School taking just a 6-0 lead into halftime. On their first drive of the 3rd quarter the Generals running back Kevin Buford plowed in from a few yards out to make it 12-0.
Magnolia Heights finally fought back, using the strong running of their all-everything senior Cameron Lawrence. The Mississippi St. commit finished a long Chiefs drive with a one-yard TD dive over the top, making it 12-7.
Magnolia Heights had an opportunity to take the lead later in the 3rd when Andrew Geeslin intercepted a pass. However, the Chiefs couldn't take advantage and had to quickly punt the ball back.
Washington School wasted no time on the ensuing drive with Rob Koestler going deep to Ryan Elliott for a TD on the first play of that possession.
The Generals scored once more in the 4th on another Buford run, taking home the title 26-7.
Washington school finishes with a 9-3 overall record, while Magnolia Heights takes second after an 11-2 season.
