2008 Prentiss Christian Football Preview

Saints Season Outlook

By Allen Crain

PRENTISS CHRISTIAN SAINTS

MPSA Class 2-A, District 4

2007 Record:  1-9 overall, 1-3 in district

Key Losses:  QB Garrett Jackson (Hinds C.C.)

Head Coach:  Ryan Porter (entering 2nd season)

Coach's 2008 Outlook:

Prentiss Christian Offense:  As many schools are doing these days, the Saints will use the spread as their base offense.  Coach Porter says he has been using the spread offense his entire football career and will continue to use it as long as it works.  To run his offense, Coach Porter will rely on All-District wide receiver Hunter McPhail (30 rec., 600 yds., 8 TDs).  Wide receiver Matthew Speights and right tackle Clay Traylor return to help bolster the offense from their positions.

Prentiss Christian Defense:  The Saints will primarily feature a 4-3 front on defense.  Coach Porter says it works well against many different kinds of offenses and formations.  Plus, it fits his team's personnel the best.  To apply pressure on opponents, the entire defensive line and defensive backs McPhail and Speights return.  Speights led the team in interceptions last season, while Traylor led the team in tackles.

Prentiss Christian Notable Games:  Like most coaches, the most important games on Prentiss Christian's schedule are within the district.  These district games include:  Simpson, Columbia, Brookhaven, and Copiah academies.

Coach's Key To Victory:  On offense, the Saints' strength will come from the offensive line.  With good line play, the Saints should be able to run the ball often, even in a timing and rhythm offense like the spread.  On defense, the Saints mus be extremely aggressive to the ball and tackle well, according to Coach Porter.
