Good morning and thanks for joining us for another day of live updates from Saints training camp. Hardly a cloud in the sky as we're expecting a steamy day here at Millsaps College.
8:49 a.m. The team is back on the upper, grass practice fields, the same spot they were at on day one. As the guys walk out we can see that most are in full pads, but Deuce McAllister is in just shorts and his jersey, looks like he won't have a full workout this morning. Deuce has been going hard in the early session and then resting a bit in the late practice, but that's not the case today.
8:59 a.m. Huge crowd for this first weekend workout. The portable stands are full plus there's maybe another hundred people standing wherever they can find a spot.
9:10 a.m. With Deuce out of this practice it looks like Aaron Stecker is getting most of the 2nd team reps at running back behind Reggie Bush.
9:22 a.m. While Deuce is on the bike, everybody else seems to be working out this morning for the offense. Left tackle Jammal Brown is back, as expected, after missing yesterday to attend a funeral.
9:28 a.m. We haven't really talked about the fullbacks yet, but the order pretty much is going Mike Karney with the 1st team, Kevin Dudley with the 2nd group and then rookie free agent Olaniyi Sobomehin.
9:38 a.m. The QB's and receivers look a little out of sync in some of the early drills, Robert Meachem and Terrance Copper each had a drop on quick slants.
9:56 a.m. The offensive and defensive lineman just wrapped up some pretty intense one-on-one drills. Hard to pick a winner in something like this but I will say the defensive guys looked a little stronger than the ones trying to block them.
10:04 a.m. He's proven it his first two years in the league, but watching Marques Colston everyday you see how good this guy really is. Colston never seems to let a ball hit the ground and is so smooth in his route running.
10:17 a.m. Reggie Bush had a little trouble fielding punts yesterday, he stayed after practice in the morning for some extra work and looks a lot better catching them now in special teams drills.
10:28 a.m. More special teams work taking place, always interesting to watch because you have guys that may make the team based on their special teams play more than what they do at their normal position. Adrian Arrington working with the punt block group as is running back Pierre Thomas. With only 53 players that make the final roster, your "non-stars" really need to be versatile.
10:39 a.m. We're now in full offense vs. defense and right off the bat Brees looked for Shockey down the middle but the pass was a little off. Pierre Thomas has had two nice runs in the last few plays.
10:45 a.m. It's day three and Shockey is still a fan favorite, he just caught a dump-off pass from Brees, nothing special, and received a huge ovation from the crowd as the ran down the sideline.
10:51 a.m. There are some questions surrounding Jonathan Goodwin who steps into the starter's role at center this season. Two straight plays Hollis Thomas has taken Goodwin to school in individual pass rush work.
10:57 a.m. We've got your play of the practice, Brees hit Colston with a beautiful spiral down the middle for about a 45-yard score. Next play Shockey wrestled a catch away from the defense, showing off that strength.
11:01 a.m. This practice is done, we'll have press conference tidbits posted shortly and then we'll be back with live updates again starting at 4:20 p.m.
Press Conference Tidbits:
-Deuce McAllister did not practice at all this morning. Coach Payton said that McAllister had his knee drained yesterday and that there was some swelling, which is why they held him back. They will take an MRI of the repaired knee this afternoon and reevaluate his status.
-If the Jackson native can't recover, the Saints would have to explore the free-agent running back market or rely on the likes of Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas. Thomas had a good workout this morning and he says this training camp is a lot different than first go round last year. Thomas was just trying to make the team as an undrafted rookie, now he feels he's proven something and he just needs to stay consistent.
-The latest roster moves: we know Eric Johnson was cut Friday, the team also let injured wide receiver Carlos Robinson go as well as long snapper Ryan Senser.
-One of those roster spots was taken by newly signed cornerback Tracy Porter, the others went to tight end Buck Ortega and receiver Curtis Hamilton.
-Ortega actually engaged in the first small fight of training camp, getting tangled up with Josh Savage while trying to block him.
-Lot of special teams work this morning as well, the kicking battle is heating up between Martin Gramatica and 6th round draft pick Taylor Mehlhaff. Coach Payton says whoever wins this battle will likely be the only place kicker kept on the roster.
