SOUTH PIKE EAGLES
Class 3-A, Region 7
2007 Results: 6-4 overall, 5-1 district, lost 20-18 in the 1st round of playoffs to Purvis.
Key Losses: C LaDarrius Stallings (Signed with Southwest CC), LB Edward Cockerham (signed with SWCC), OG DeMario Ricahrd (signed with SWCC), OG Brandon Hall, FS Donell Jackson
Head Coach: Randall Huffman (entering 7th season as head coach)
Coach's 2008 Outlook:
Eagles Offense: Leading rusher John Taylor returns to help lead a rushing attack that averaged 189.6 yards per game. Taylor averaged 5.8 ypg. The Eagles will lean on Taylor to do even more this year. Quarterback Tevin Martin returns to lead the offense. Martin only completed 38% of his passes last year. The Eagles desperately need him to improve on his completion percentage and increase his 398 yards he threw last year.
Eagles Defense: Leading tackler LaCraig Cook returns to lead a defense that only gave up 14.5 points per game. Cook, a linebacker, led the team with 74 tackles. His total was 36 more than the next leading tackler. Coach Huffman needs some other players to step up and help Cook. Trabradley Morgan returns to lead the secondary. His three interceptions last year was a big plus. The Eagles offense struggled last year, so they will be looking for Morgan and others to make big plays on defense.
Eagles Notable Games: The first game and the last game are the big rivalry games for the Eagles. They open up against McComb. They failed to score against the Tigers last year dropping their opener 6 to 0. As the Eagles are looking for revenge against the Tigers, the Jaguars of North Pike will be looking for a little revenge of their own. The Eagles defeated the Jaguars 16-13 in the regular season finale.
Eagles Coach's Key To Victory: The Eagles need to get the ball to John Taylor. He was by far the most productive offensive player last year. The offensive line needs to to improve. They need to be able to give quarterback Tevin Martin time to make some throws. Craig and Morgan will be back, but the Eagles need others to step up and make plays. They only gave up 14.5 ppg. last year. They need to stay around that number while the offense continues to develop.
