Saints Training Camp in Jackson: Offense Day Two, Practice Two

Saints Camp

By Travis Recek

It's time for the second practice here on day two of Saints camp. After an afternoon shower the sun is back out and the team is on the main field at Millsaps, the turf field.

4:18 p.m. We just heard word from a fan that TE Eric Johnson has been cut. Johnson was out with the team this morning, but not practicing because of an off-field injury. 2007 was Johnson's only season in New Orleans, he caught 48 passes for 378 yards. We'll try to confirm this roster move shortly.

4:30 p.m. Like yesterday, Jeremy Shockey will take on a lighter load in the afternoon session. Shockey is out here but not in shoulder pads. Same for Deuce McAllister.

4:39 p.m. With Eric Johnson off the team that leaves Jeremy Shockey, Billy Miller and Mark Campbell as the top three tight ends. Ronnie Ghent is also still here, but will have to make a strong impression in camp to earn a spot. Recently signed draft pick Tracy Porter takes the roster spot of Johnson.

4:46 p.m. Shockey just dropped a pass from Brees that was intercepted by Marvin Mitchell. The offense is going about half speed in 11-on-11 drills against the defense.

4:48 p.m. Shockey dropped another ball, not having pads on must be throwing him off.

4:53 p.m. While the team is stretching, McAllister is off to the side riding the exercise bike.

5:15 p.m. There's a good number of fans out to watch practice this evening, moving the workout to the main field definitely allows for more room for people to sit on this Friday night.

5:19 p.m. Dont know if there is any room on the roster for him, but Todd Blythe has looker pretty good at times. The rookie receiver did have a record setting career at iowa St.

5:27 p.m. First chance to get a look at the kicking battle between Martin Gramatica and rookie Taylor Mehlhaff, Each just took three kicks at various distances, Grammatica made two of three, Mehlhaff was three for three (we're giving him the last one but it was close).

5:34 p.m. More special teams drills taking place, the guys are working on kick coverage.

5: 38 p.m. We mentioned this morning that left tackle Jammal Brown was out today to attend a funeral, in his spot has been Jermon Bushrod.

5:43 p.m. Your play of the day so far, Mark Brunell found Adrian Arrington on a long bomb down the left seam for a score.

5:58 p.m. No real hitting going on as the team is in just pads and shorts, but Reggie Bush just ran into the massive structure that is Will Smith and bounced back with a little force.

6:00 p.m. Practice closes as Brees finds Mark Campbell, who makes a sweet reaching grab on a ball thrown behind him. We're headed over to the interview tent, our day two wrap to come in just a little bit.
