Welcome back to Fox 40's continuing coverage of the Saints Defense in Training Camp.
8:55 AM The Special Teams unit is working on the field.
9:08 AM Josh Bullocks and Mike McKenzie still aren't off the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. Both are on the field walking through practice drills.
9:14 AM Mark Simoneau is still working with the first team defense over Jonathan Vilma. That shouldn't last much longer though.
9:36 AM Secondary coach Dennis Allen is running through a few tackling drills with the corners.
9:41 AM On a sidenote, Saints owner Tom Benson and his wife just arrived to check out practice, much to the delight of some fans.
9:58 AM The corners were getting worked in one-on-one drills. Randall Gay just gave up a deep pass to Meachem. The same story for most of the other corners in the drills. There were a few pass break ups, but the receivers stole the spotlight in these drills.
10:05 AM The special teams unit is on the field right now running through some coverage drills.
10:22 AM Good safety coverage from Chris Reis and David Roach on a deep pass intended for Meachem.
10:27 AM S Tuff Harris just intercepted a Tyler Palko pass that was intended for Shockey.
10:39 Mark Brunell got his throw off late and it was picked off by CB Jason Craft.
10:50 AM DT Antwan Lake had his first highlight today, swatting down a pass from Brunell. Good job by the entire D-line on that one.
Press Conference Tidbits:
- They'll continue to rotate Jonathan Vilma and Mark Simoneau in and out at middle linebacker. He says they're both getting a lot of good work in and that there is similar competition at every position.
- Randall Gay is making a good impression on Sean Payton. Payton said he's smart, has good instincts, and has a knack for finding the ball.
-Defensive Line coach Ed Orgeron is very impressed with the talent on the line. He likes the intensity they've shown so far in camp, and says they weren't as productive as they should've been last year.
Another Tidbit:
The NY Jets finally reached a deal with first-round draft pick LB Vernon Gholston. Gholston was drafted at No. 6, and this means that five of the draft's first six picks are now under contract. The Saints traded up three spots to select Sedrick Ellis at No. 7. So hopefully this should set the stage for Ellis and his agent to get a deal done soon. Wednesday Saints GM and vice president Mickey Loomis said they didn't expect Ellis to sign anytime soon, but this should certainly speed up negotiations.
FOX 40 will be back for more coverage from Day Two of Saints Camp as soon as the next practice gets started at 4:20 PM
