Welcome to another morning of Saints training camp here in Jackson and welcome again to FOX 40's live coverage of the team.
9:01 a.m. The team is all out on the field and after working out on the upper level grass fields yesterday, they have moved to the lower level grass field this morning. This is the field that was not in good enough condition to be used last year but looks great now.
9:06 a.m. The offense is going through some half-speed run throughs. You can see both Drew Brees and Coach Payton giving a lot of instruction to Jeremy Shockey as to where the right spots to line up are.
9:19 a.m. Stretching time. Yesterday morning Marques Colston was very limited in his activity but he's out here in full pads and has taken part in all the light drills so far.
9:33 a.m. One of the more vocal coaches you'll hear on the practice field, minus Ed Orgeron, is wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson. He's got a lot of work to do with one proven star at the position and a host of young, talented but unproven guys coming up. If he can turn Robert Meachem into a solid #2 option and maybe bring along Adrian Arrington, then the Saints could be unstoppable.
9:46 a.m. The QB's and receivers are together working on routes and looking very smooth. I was about to say I haven't seen a ball hit the ground in five minutes, but veteran David Patten just let one drop to the turf and Meachem had one slide off his fingertips.
9:50 a.m. Patten just made up for the drop with a one-handed snag while going out of bounds.
9:55 a.m. In one-on-one drills Robert Meachem just manhandled Randall Gay and got free for a deep ball. Patten was up quickly to congratulate Meachem. Those two have been working together quite a bit in the off-season. One play later the first minor injury occurred as rookie Carlos Robinson pulled up lame while running a pattern. Robinson tried to stretch it out but is walking off the field right now, it could be as simple as a cramp but we'll keep an eye on it.
10:01 a.m. One guy who stood out a little in these recent drills is Lance Moore. The young wide out played his first full season in 2007, catching 32 balls, 2 for touchdowns. He's battling for playing time on this team, but could be a viable option if Meachem and Devery Henderson don't progress.
10:11 a.m. Some special teams work going on. Reggie Bush, Lance Moore and Skyler Green are working as the punt returners. While Bush has made some ankle-breaking moves, he's also dropped two kicks.
10:22 a.m. Tyler Palko is struggling a little in team drills today. Palko was just intercepted and lost a snap.
10:40 a.m. Robert Meachem just made a really nice catch on a ball thrown high by Mark Brunell.
10:44 a.m. Terrance Copper has made a couple of nice plays in the 7-on-7 drills going on. Copper, who came over with Coach Payton from Dallas, caught a seam route for a TD from Tyler Palko.
10:49 a.m. They have moved into full team offense vs. defense and it looks like Jeremy Shockey is sitting these drills out. It's probably more for him to observe and learn the plays and formations more than anything else.
10:55 a.m. Practice one on day two is wrapping up and we'll be heading down to talk with coach and players shortly. We'll have a quick wrap coming up and we'll be back for more live updates this afternoon starting at 4:20 p.m.
Press Conference Tidbits:
-The injury to WR Carlos Robinson is a tweaked hamstring, he's being evaluated to determine how much, if any, time he'll miss.
-OL Jammal Brown missed this morning's workout to attend a funeral, he's expected back in Jackson tonight and should return to practice tomorrow
-When Coach Payton was asked about Jeremy Shockey's transition into the offense, he said he's more worried about bringing him along physically than mentally. Also saying that Shockey is receiving individual time with the assistant coaches on the playbook.
-Also heard from QB Mark Brunell about the potential of this offense. Brunell, who was around some talented groups in Jacksonville, said this unit could compare to those teams and that the Saints have a lot of guys who can really play this game.
