Indians Season Outlook

By Allen Crain

HAZLEHURST INDIANS

Class 3-A, Region 6

2007 Results: 5-6 overall, 5-1 district - lost in 1st round of playoffs to Morton

Key Losses: FB Keyshawn Reese

Head Coach: Todd McDaniel (entering 1st season)

Coach's 2008 Outlook

Hazlehurst Offense: The Hazlehurst offense will be familiar to fans this season.  The team will continue to run out of the Wing-T formation. The entire backfield, along with four offensive linemen, return from last season's squad. With 5' 9" wingback Fred Fuller running behind two 300 lbs linemen, the Indians should not have any trouble running the ball. Offensive tackle Joseph Warner checks in at 6' 5", 330 lbs, while the other side of the line is anchored by 6' 2", 315 lbs offensive tackle Kristopher Williams.

Hazlehurst Defense: With a new coach on board, the Indians' defense will play with an aggressive, attacking style out of a 4-4 base. The back of the defense looks to be the strongest unit for the Indians. Rashad Williams and Leviticus Cain return to their linebacker spots to supply that aggressive tenacity to the defense.  Justin Durr returns to his free safety slot to keep opponents from throwing deep on the Indians. These returnees along with three returning defensive linemen give the Indians much needed experience.

Hazlehurst Notable Games: The first game of the season against Franklin County is always a key game to start the season. After games against Vicksburg and Warren Central, the Indians get really get down to work when the district season starts, and that means games against Collins and Magee.

Coach's Key To Victory: Coach McDaniel believes his team can have a solid season if the team stays together. The team must play with continuity, while being aggressive at the same time. If the running game is successful and the defense constantly attacks the opponent, the Indians will be looking at another district championship.
