Tigers Season Outlook

By Travis Recek

JEFFERSON COUNTY TIGERS

Class 3-A, Region 7

2007 Results: 8-3 overall, 5-1 in district - lost in 1st round of playoffs to Perry Central

Key Losses: QB Percy Turner (Alcorn St. signee), LB Shavikia Gaines (Alcorn St. signee)

Head Coach: James Herrington (entering 3rd season)

Coach's 2008 Outlook:

Jefferson County Offense: Percy Turner was a big time playmaker at QB last season for the Tigers, but Jeffery Collins saw some action under center and should be ready to take over the offense. The man giving the ball to Collins, center Jordan Shorter, is a three-year starter and provides stability on the offensive line. The player taking the ball from Collins the most may be all-around athlete Darryl McGee. Clocked at 4.2 in the 40-yard dash, McGee will be all over the field, handling the ball at running back, receiver and kick-returner. If the offensive line can play as well as they did last season, Jefferson County should have an explosive offense.

Jefferson County Defense: Everything on this side of the ball centers around middle linebacker Calvin Lewis. A rock at this position, Lewis has been a starter since his freshman year, leading the team in tackles each of those previous three seasons. One of the biggest players in the state anchors the Tigers defensive line, with Larry Banks (6'5" 340 lbs) plugging up the holes.

Jefferson County Notable Games: Non-conference rivalries take place in the first two weeks when Jefferson County takes on Natchez and Port Gibson. The major district games will come against perennial powers South Pike and Franklin County.

Coach's Key To Victory: It's all about finishing. This team was good enough to compete with the best in class 3-A last season, but they couldn't close out teams late in the game. Coach Herrington saw a big turnaround in his 2nd year as head coach and believes they can take another step forward this upcoming season.
