NATCHEZ BULLDOGS
Class 5-A, Region 3
2007 Results: 5-6 overall, 3-4 district - no playoffs
Key Losses: DE Garrod Clemmons (Copiah-Lincoln C.C. signee), WR Deshawn Griggs (Copiah-Lincoln C.C. signee), LB Callon Green
Head Coach: Lance Reed (entering 5th season)
Coach's 2008 Outlook
Natchez Offense: The Natchez offense looks to be stable at the quarterback position with QB Javon Washington returning. Washington will run the spread offense to put running back Willie Newman and wide receiver Rico Richardson in open space. Coach Reed says he is looking for even more playmakers from his offense.
Natchez Defense: The Bulldogs will feature a 4-2-5 defense to stop opponents this fall led by free safety Donald Bates. Bates will have help in the secondary with fellow returnee CB Wesley Pendleton. Defensive end Nick Brooks will provide pressure on the opposing quarterback, while Zack Evans will stuff the run from his linebacker spot. If the Bulldogs play as a whole and stay disciplined, Coach Reed believes his defense will succeed.
Natchez Notable Games: The Natchez schedule is loaded with a number of key games, including a matchup with defending district champion, Meridian. District runner-up Oak Grove and nearby rival Jefferson County make the schedule even tougher.
Coach's Key to Victory: Following last season's 5-6 record, it can be easy to predict another win or two for the Bulldogs to get over the hump with a winning record and perhaps make the playoffs for the first time since 1997. If the Bulldogs can limit the turnovers and maintain a disciplined approach, the season should be a success for Natchez.
