Tigers Season Outlook

By Christopher England

Jim Hill Tigers

Class 5-A, Region 3

2007 Results: 2-9 overall, 0-7 League

Key Losses: WR/CB Brandon Terrio, OL/DL Julian Luney

Head Coach: Henry Blount (entering 15th year, 5th as head coach)

Coach's 2008 Outlook

Jim Hill Offense: The Tigers will be hard-pressed to replace last year's do-it-all and team MVP, Brandon Terrio.  Running back Jordan Harper helped  the Tigers run for 1,487 yards as a team last year, but they were equally impressive passing.  Through the air, the Tigers accounted for 2,075 yards. Coach Blount hopes to spread the ball around out of the shotgun formation.  It's important when you run out of the shotgun to have a versatile quarterback, and the Tigers have that in returning senior quarterback James Smith.  Smith is a dual-threat quarterback who can hurt you with his arm, or his legs.  Smith can play wide receiver as well, so sophomore Carl Bryce may see some action at quarterback.  When Smith plays WR, he and senior WR Darman Burkett will be a force to be reckoned with.

Jim Hill Defense: The Tigers will put 8 men in the box and dare you to run.  The TJs will help anchor the Tiger defense.  Tommy Johnson, Jr. will move from OLB to ILB this year.  Also joining him on defense will be team captain Terrence Johnson who is moving from RB to OLB.  Don't forget about the lock down corner, Dyrell Body.  He will help the 8 men in the box by shutting down his side of the field.  The 4-4 is a balanced defense and in that, the Tigers will be able to attack from any point on the field.

Jim Hill Notable Games: Provine is the first game on the schedule and would be a huge morale booster, if the Tigers can pull this one off.  Only a couple of blocks away from one another, this game is always a big one.  From football to checkers, they compete fiercely against one another.  Terry will be the first division game, and the Tigers will need to win this game to help their confidence down the stretch.

Jim Hill Coach's Key To Victory: Offensively, the O line will be the key to the Tigers' success.  The line will be young with the loss of Julian Luney, but the young OL will have to step up to give quarterback James Smith the opportunity to get the ball to the playmakers.  The Tigers had trouble scoring at times last year, getting shutout 4 times.  However, they will be deep at WR, so if the OL can gel quick enough, they may be able to put some points on the board.
