MURRAH MUSTANGS
Class 5-A, Region 2
2007 Results: 5-6 overall, 1-6 district
Key losses: DE Demetrius Bryan, DE Kyle Black, WR Ishmael Henderson, WR Xavier Simmons, LB Arthur Broadway, LB Delantz Terran, LB Michael Ortega
Head Coach: Zack Grady (entering 2nd season)
Coach's 2008 Outlook:
Murrah Offense: Murrah returns most of its offensive weapons from last season including QB Joseph Thomas. WR Dundrecous Nelson, WR James Robertson, and RB Marquis Williams all play important roles in this multiple spread offense. Coach Grady says his main philosophy is to "make people defend all eleven players" on the field by putting them in space and making the opponent defend the whole football field. But Coach Grady also knows that it all starts with protecting the QB, if they can do that the offense will be successful.
Murrah Defense: Most of the player losses came on defense for Murrah. The only returning starters in this unit are in the secondary (CB Marvin Dixon, CB Jamal Stevens, and FS Mike Hill). But the Mustangs don't worry much about personnel on defense, they just attack. Murrah will continue to blitz opponents all season, while running multiple schemes, but mainly alternating between 4-3 and a 5-2 defense.
Murrah Notable Games: Any inner-city rivalry game is always big so players will be up for Callaway and Provine. But the Mustangs have a date with district powerhouse Madison Central marked on their calendars.
Coach's Key To Victory: The biggest change for Murrah in 2008 is off-season training. Having taken the head coaching job mid-way through last summer, Coach Grady felt he didn't have adequate time to prepare his team for the season. But after putting in a good spring, Grady feels his team will understand his system much better.
