2008 Pisgah Football Preview

Dragons Season Outlook

By Travis Recek

PISGAH DRAGONS

Class 1-A, Region 4

2007 Results: 3-8 overall, 2-8 district - no playoffs

Key Losses: LB Curtis Wood, OL Keon Hill

Head Coach: Marc Herrington (entering 5th season)

Coach's 2008 Outlook:

Pisgah Offense: Look for the option attack this season in Pisgah. The Dragons are using this scheme to help combat their lack of size and utilize the talents of running back Donatello Luckett. The junior ball carrier has been a starter since his freshman year and racked up more than 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons. The guy getting the ball to Luckett should be quarterback Marcellus Grant. Grant played middle school football in this small Mississippi town before moving to Florida for a short while. He's back and could provide a passing attack the Dragons desperately need.

Pisgah Defense: Coach Herrington would love to run the 4-3 scheme on defense, but a shortage of linebackers will force them to go with the 5-3. That means good defensive line play will be critical, so seniors Tyler Griffin and Jermaine Watson will need to have big years. The other returning senior starter is Donnell Wilson.  His job is to captain the secondary.  The defense as a whole needs to play with more intensity.

Pisgah Notable Games: The Battle of 43, we're talking about Pisgah vs. Pelahatchie. With a 25-22 victory last season the Dragons took home this coveted trophy for the first time since 1978. The challenge now is to try and finally win back to back games against their rival.

Coach's Key To Victory: Moving into an 11-team district last year proved to be a tough task for the Dragons. They should have a better idea of how to handle this taxing schedule, which has them playing four district games in a row to start the season. If Grant can be the quarterback they think he can be and Luckett continues to be a premiere 1-A back, then Pisgah might make a little noise this season.
