UPDATE - Jackson's City Attorney, Sarah O'Reilly-Evans has been subpoenaed to appear in federal court in the trial of Mayor Melton. The attorney representing Melton's co-defendant and former bodyguard Michael Recio, has requested O'Reilly-Evans bring all documents, e-mails and notes pertaining to the termination of a former deputy city attorney who handled requests from federal authorities investigating Melton and his former bodyguards. They're charged with violating the civil rights of a tenant and the owner of a Jackson duplex.
Fox 40 News caught up with Hinds County Sheriff-JPD Chief Malcolm McMillin and asked him about the fallout from the dismissal of a deputy city attorney, Katherine Pugh. She was assigned to work for the Jackson Police Department. He gave a short interview Monday morning as he walked from the Hinds County Chancery building across the street to the Hinds County Courthouse. He said Pugh is a good attorney and suggested we ask the city why she's no longer employed with them. FOX 40 News has yet to hear from the city attorney Sarah O'Reilly-Evans but spoke with Jackson's Chief Administrative Officer, Robert Walker. He says it's a personnel matter, and he would not discuss why Pugh no longer works for the city.
A Jackson city attorney who handled federal subpoenas related to the investigation of Mayor Frank Melton and his former bodyguards was reportedly shown the door November 11. It's unclear whether attorney, Katherine Pugh, was given an opportunity to resign. Sources told Fox 40 News Sheriff-Chief Malcolm McMillin had his personal belongings removed from his JPD office after a meeting with Pugh and city officials including, City Attorney Sarah O'Reilly Evans. McMillin told Fox 40 News Thursday he was only taking a vacation. He was back on the job Monday.
Pugh already has a new job. She's working for the sheriff as his legal counsel. The position has been vacant for months since the former legal counsel was appointed a special judge in Hinds County in July.
"We are delighted to have Ms. Pugh as counsel at the sheriff's office," said spokesman, Captain Steve Pickett.
A source tells Fox 40 News Pugh was upset and in tears after the meeting with city officials. She had been working in the JPD headquarters for about a year, and handled requests from federal authorities investigating a civil rights case against Melton and his former police bodyguards, Michael Recio and Marcus Wright.
Recio and Melton's attorneys tried unsuccessfully to get the case dismissed after JPD records revealed Wright had been investigated by internal affairs after a gay prostitute accused him of sexual misconduct. The defense claimed that allegation "factored into the decision of Marcus Wright to plead guilty." Wright is cooperating with prosecutors after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.
Fox 40 News tried to reach Pugh on her new job, but was told she was not available. Fox 40 News called and paid a visit to city attorney Evans but she has not responded to our requests for comment. JPD's Assistant Chief Lee Vance would only say Pugh no longer works for the city.
